How to impress greek family?
I want to know more about greek culture so that if I get invited over for dinner I would be able to impress and gain acceptance from my potentional greek boyfriend's family(he's my ex but I want to get back together). What knowledge should know.I just want them to feel I am smart and good for their son.

umm did you not watch that last part of the movie? They were all happy and she got married...HELLO LOL. and to begin with George is only a little bit greek. We were together before and his parents were interested in me. In fact his mom was glad that I introduced myself to her. I also worked with his brother and were good friends and I became friends with his friends. I just would like good conversation like knowing what greek words mean, like the name Dora means gift. like stuff like that that's impressive and interesting. I think he's only greek on his mom's side and they are other stuff too. Just like maybe I could make some food for them one night. Something cute and sweet like that. no big deal. I just would want to come off respectable and likeable to them. Ya know I'm sure they have some culturely differences even though they're only a little bit greek.

Have you seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" If not I highly recommend that you rent it and watch it - its portrayal of how a Greek family feels about a non-Greek marrying into the family is fairly accurate. If the family is traditional, like it sounds like his is, then there may be nothing you can really do about it at all. They will not accept you, at least not right away.

But don't let that stop you. If you are truly in love with him and he with you, then you should just move forward. If you watch the film, you will see that the extended family WILL accept you, you'll notice that the rest of the family loves the man she will marry BEFORE the Dad comes around to it being OK, but in the end he does. And he will in your life as well.

Also, Greek parents are very into the in-laws. They really want to be able to talk and get along with your parents and family as well. If they get to know your parents and have a lot of common interests with them, that helps too.

Remember, when you marry into a a Greek family your family are not in-laws, your families merge together. You become like one big family. This may not be your cup of tea.

Other than that, if they see that you are being good to him, that you truly care for him, and that you make him truly happy, then they will eventually accept you. You don't have to try and be Greek, you just have to care for him. And him for you.

Firstly : Do not talk too much about greek culture. I would not like it, and I am a greek. Secondly, do not tell anyone about this you are reading now. You must try to impress them with some of your culture or by asking some questions about greek culture, that maybe you do not even know the answer. That way you can learn more about the greeks. A good thing would be to try learn some greek words, like the example with Dora you stated. Also, if you are a vegeterian or something please try to hide it. It is really the worst thing that you can say. aybe after a while you will be able to reveal it freely.

Watch "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." It's all about what you're speaking about, plus it's super funny.

Maybe find the greek root word of your last name. Or of other names. That's one way you could impress them.

Good luck!

the best wasy to a greek's heart has to be food in my opinion.
make a yummy greek dish and bring it over.
learn about their customs, or holidays, like easter!
but honostly, stick with the food, i know three greek families quite intimatly and if they all have anything in common it has got to be their love for foods.
