ive been invited to a party with a "college/frat party" theme (we're australian)
so what do americans normally wear to these parties?

Something drenched in beer, barf, and cheap cologne.
And a few "F" grade term-papers stuck in your pocket would be a nice touch.

Get T-shirts/sweatshirts with the greek letters of a fraternity. If those cannot be found then anything from the Abercrombie and Fitch catalog would probably do.
I do like the previous answer of a toga, but only if it is also a toga party. That would be humorous either way.

Preppy stuff. American Eagle stuff if you want to blend in. Me personally would were what ever I want to because thats me. But really in American frat college parties no one cares what anyone is wearing. Unless its a frat with a dress code.

if you're a guy... a mullett and a tshirt that says something about beer on it
if you're a girl... a mini skirt and atiny t-shirt with sorority name on it
