"Our two minds .... One is an act of the emotional
mind, the other of the rational mind. In a very real
sense we have two minds, one that thinks and one that
feels" (Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence,
Bloomsbury Publishing, London, 1996, page 8). This
rational mind is also called the faculty of logic and
reason.
The Upanishads say that these two are opposite in
nature. Modern psychologists also know it, but they
are not very sure of it:
"At the same time, reason sometimes clearly seems to
come into conflict with some desires (even while not
being in conflict with others) giving us the impression
that reason is separate from emotion".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reason
The persons in whom the emotional mind works dominantly
are called optimists.
The persons in whom the rational mind works dominantly
are called pessimists.
The Upanishads say that the emotional mind searches
for some thing good in what is generally termed as 'bad' by
the society, and the rational mind searches for some thing
bad in what is generally termed as 'good' by the society.
Hence the saying that optimists see oppurtunity in evey
danger, the pessimists see danger in every oppurtunity.

An optimist looks for the good in every situation. A pessimist, on the other hand, usually looks for the worst in life. The optimist thinks of danger as a place where he or she might find an opportunity; whereas the pessimist thinks of opportunity as a hideout for danger.

Someone who is optimistic is looking at a situation and thinking of the good aspects. Someone who is a pessimist is looking at a situation and seeing all the downfalls. Optimist "If I buy this car I will have my own transportation and the ability to drive when and where I want to". Pessimist " If I buy this car I will have montly payments and auto insurance and will be contributing to the depletion of the ozone and I might be in an auto accident."
