"Common sense is nothing more than a set of prejudices laid down by the age of eighteen." Albert Einstein.

'Common sense' is nothing more than a set of rules that we have learned to deal with our world.

However these rules may hinder and even stop us from doing new things and thinking new thoughts.

What we must do is to first unlearn all of the things that are holding us back, we must cut the ropes that bind us to the useless rules of our past.

Only then, once we are free from our past can we truly move forward onto better things.

We must never forget also that this is and will always be a continuing process, it will never end.

Hope this helps.

"Our two minds .... One is an act of the emotional
mind, the other of the rational mind. In a very real
sense we have two minds, one that thinks and one that
feels" (Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence,
Bloomsbury Publishing, London, 1996, page 8). This
rational mind is also called the faculty of logic and
reason.

The Upanishads say that these two are opposite in nature.
Modern psychologist also know it, but they are not very
sure about it:

"At the same time, reason sometimes clearly seems to
come into conflict with some desires (even while not
being in conflict with others) giving us the impression
that reason is separate from emotion".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reason

Rational component is connected with learning. It works
dominantly in men. There are very few women who were
called learned persons. The emotional component is
connected with unlerning. It works dominantly in females.

I think that most of us do need to unlearn some undesirable attitudes and qualities in our lives. Some of us were raised in prejudiced households, some were abused, some caved in to peer pressure. Most of us need to unlearn these things, and start living in the present--and thinking about the future.

No. We have to learn, NOT unlearn. We have to take what we have learned so far, and add it to what we learn as we go along. The more we take in, the more we understand. The more we understand, the more we know how much we have left to learn. It's a never ending circle.
