The backward high jump was named for a guy named Dick Fosbury that first started jumping the bar in that manner back in the '68 Olympics. Up until that time, it was cleared in a forward hurdle-type manner.

First of all, people were high jumping before the "Fosbury Flop" came along. They used a number of methods, like the "scissors, western roll, and straddle." The Fosbury Flop was invented by Dick Fosbury. There is a lot written on him if you just put his name into google, but I'm including a link below. Fosbury won the olympics in 1968 with his technique.

When I was in school, high school kids were still using the straddle, but some were learning the flop. The last world record with the straddle was 7' 8 1/8".
