I think "to thine own self be true" conveys some of what you mean, but it's different. It applies to everyone, to be true to your dreams, goals. I think it includes taking care of your health - mental and physical.

I think it's the cleaned up, less jaded version of what you're trying to say. You need a degree of fierceness to escape oppressive relationships, however I hope you find enough peace in the future that you can rewrite your meaning statement to acknowledge that we are all on the same path, and all need to give and recieve help to make it as a community.

The only self which that quote can allude to is one in the person being spoken of has complete knowledge of themselves - other wise how can you be true to it?

The test for this is, have you changed your mind in the past? Did you know you were going to change your mind before you did? Have you found a way to know you're not going to change your mind in the future like you have done in the past, which you thought you weren't going to change then either? What proof of yourself do you have then, that you are who you think you are, and not who you are going to be?

Such a self which has affirmations from perfect knowledge is what to be true to. That self knows itself as eternal, or else its going to change its mind, and prove itself not to what it thought it was. So indeed be true to yourself, only the self which doesn't change, as getting caught up rigidly as something which is bound to change is delaying knowledge of that self not being a true self, but an imagined one.

Be the self that thinks, not the self that is thought. All thoughts of self must change, or else we are no longer thinking, and we lose self control - we are made into our limited thoughts instead of us making thoughts work for us. You have learned, but learning must never stop, or the rewards of improvement will cease too.

God bless.

"The more difficulties one sees in the world the more perfect one becomes. The more you plough and dig the ground the more fertile it becomes. The more you cut the branches of a tree the higher and stronger it grows. The more you put the gold in the fire, the purer it becomes. The more you sharpen the steel by grinding the better it cuts. Therefore, the more sorrows one sees the more perfect one becomes. That is why, in all times, the Prophets of God have had tribulations and difficulties to withstand. The more often the captain of a ship is in the tempest and difficult sailing the more greater his knowledge becomes. Therefore I am happy that you have had great tribulations and difficulties . . . Strange it is that I love you and still I am happy that you have sorrows. ('Abdu'l-Bahá, Star of the West, vol. XIV, no. 2, p. 41)"

the quote means that don't let someone else abuse you. Never forget that you are a human being and that you have natural rights that you are born with, and no one should be allowed to take that away. Also, you need never let some one take away your self pride, self confidence, and most importantly, self respect.
