I own the abridged version, and it's great. Sure, it's drawn out sometimes, but wow. I'd like to read the unabridged version myself when I get the chance. Though, if you read for an hour each day, it depends how many pages you'd read in an hour.

I think you will definitely be able to finish the book by May 26th and that once you start it, you may find yourself wanting to spend more than an hour a day reading it. You might find yourself up in the wee hours of the night sneaking in a couple extra hours of reading. You may find yourself unable to put the darn thing down and get back to things that have to be done. This is one of the best books ever written and I think you will definitely like it. There are lots of characters to keep track of and many things going on at the same time and it just keeps you absorbed all the way through. Stephen King has a gift for characterization and you learn to understand the characters for who they are, good or evil, and you start to almost live the book and care about what happens to each person in the book. I think you will definitely enjoy it and I highly recommend that you read it. This is one of King's best.

Well...since you have 73 days until May 26 and it is a 1000 page book, that means about 13-14 pages per day...so depending on how fast or slow you read, I would say it's a pretty good bet that you could finish it.
As for how good the book is...I've never actually read a Stephen King book, but the movie is pretty good and usually the books are better than the movies so I would go for it.

The Stand had me hooked from beginning to end. I don't think you will need to worry about finishing it by that time frame. I read it in approximately one week. It is one of his best works, IMHO. If you have the time to spare, you will WANT to read much more than the obligatory amount of pages a day to finish it on time. If you are looking for something short by King and a good read, read Thinner, The Running Man, The Long Walk, or Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. They are available as separate books or in his short story collections.

I love the Stand, and you'll probably be able to decide whether you like it or not early on.
How fast can you read? If you can do like forty or so pages in an hour you might be fine.

It's okay, but I have to say that the "twist" ending completely ruined it for me. If you believe in spirits, the divine, things like that, perhaps you will find it uplifting.
