Do you trust the United States economy/government? Why? Why not?

Nervous due to the collapse of the housing market and the predictions that this year 1.5 million homeowners will lose their homes. That will have a serious impact on the whole nation's economy, not just the new homeless.

Most economists predict unemployment will rise this year, back up to 5% or more.

The markets are looking rather gloomy, too. The dollar is still depressed, oil prices are gradually rising again and wages are pretty much stagnant.

All these things combined will have a negative effect on consumer confidence, disposable income and debt. And when people living in an economy that is 75% fuelled by consumption stop spending - the whole thing breaks down.

I run a small service business from my home. Business has been good, have been staying busy and making a decent profit. Even with all the illegal workers in the southwest, unemployment is very low.

Overall, the economy is doing just fine, but I am very concerned about all the spending by our government. No, I don't trust the government because they do not act in the best interests of the average american.

Considering everyone is real jittery because of the huge drop in the market due to China and then dropped alot again today because everyone is worried about the mortgage loans and lending practices going on, I'd say the state of the American economy is highly tenuous right now. And, the media and conservative wonks and talking heads are basically pumping it til Bush gets out of office. We have huge deficits both trade and rising debt, this isn't a good thing. And, our GDP is going down. The war is also costing us alot of money and our president is a spendaholic with our tax dollars, unless you make more than 250,000 a year or you're from the oil industry Bush support system. then he likes giving you alot of corporate welfare in the form of subsidies while you are making record breaking and enormous profits at the pump. If you're not one of those people, then you are paying for your gas twice, once with your taxes and once at the pump. In other words, if you're one of the top 1% elitests in this country, the economy is doing very well for you. If you are middle class or poor, then the economy is not doing well for you.
