My credit is bad and so I can't obtain a scheme from a cell phone company.

Therefore I'm looking at using these pay as you go cell phone from places like Walmart, Target, etc?

Does anyone actually know how they work? Which is the best place to purchase one from? What are the benenfits of using one of these phones and what are the pitfalls?

Thank you VERY VERY much for any help received.

a flip phone tracfone..........awesomeness. i use mine constantly and it is fantabulous!

depending on the number of minutes you buy, the time you have to use your phone varies. for example, if you bought a 60 minute card, you get 90 days of service. if you buy a 60 minute card, and you still had say 10 minutes left over, then those minutes would not be lost, but you would not be able to use them until you buy a new card

say your 90 days is up, and you have 10 minutes left over. then a week later you buy another 60 minutes card. then when your phone got re-activated, there would be 70 available minutes for you to use. get it?

you can but cards and phones at walmart, but sometimes tracfone.com has special deals and/or offers.

advantages- easy, pay-as-you-go minutes, no worry about cell bills

disadvantages- having to keep gettign new cards, when you are roaming, the price of one minute doubles (ex: if you are roaming, and talk on your cell for 2 minutes, it will deduct 4 minutes)

good luck and i hope this helps!

I highly recommend a pay-as-you-go system. I would love to be out of my contract with Verizon & go to prepay. They are constantly charging for some stupid crap that I didn't do, or adding fees. Plus I'm stuck with them until the cows come home. I've heard the tracphone is a really good one. They arevery easy to use. Just buy a card with minutes on it (you can buy as many minutes as you want) Call the # on the card & type in the serial # thats on the card. Then you talk until those run out & just go get a new card. Good luck!!

if you dont use the phone a lot then virgin mobile is the best you only have to put minutes on it every 90 days and what u dont use keeps adding up and can do this for as little as $15/90 days. if you use the phone alot then i suggest either
i-wireless (i-ontheweb.com) they have a free nights and weekend package or unlimited package, or jump mobile (jumpmobile.com) free text and incoming calls.my friend text me so i call him when he wants to talk
