Like hunger and thirst, sleep is a basic biological drive we can't ignore. In fact, when we don't get enough of it, our bodies eventually force us to make up for the sleep lost. However, why we sleep remains a mystery–and one of the biggest unanswered questions in psychology.
But recently, results from sleep studies in humans and animals have begun to lead some promising explanations. Researchers are finding that sleep may help babies learn the placement of their own limbs , it may help adults fix new memories in their brains , it may give the brain time to replenish energy stores or it may allow it to recuperate from the learning it does during the day ("Wild findings on animal Or–perhaps most likely–sleep may do some combination of all those things.

Yes, you have to sleep. Many reasons for this. 1.) You must dream. It allows your subconscious to unload, or you will go insane. You suffer psychosis. 2.) Your body needs to rest or it will shut down. Kidneys, heart, etc.. Sleep helps your body re-energize, regenerate, so that you can function. 3.) If you don't believe me, look at a meth-head, after 2-5 days of not sleeping. They get paranoid and are quite frankly, losing their grip on reality. True, the drug also is affecting them, but I think you get the idea.

yea dude it is real bad if u dont sleep for a day or two, and you really do need to go se a doctor about it. Now why do we have to sleep? We have to sleep so that are bodies and minds can get get rested cuz if you dont rest then your body will eventually shut its self down and that would not be good for your heart

you need to sleep because your body cant keep going for long amounts of time. your immune system works its best while you are sleeping, which is why people tell you to rest when you are sick. without sleep your body will become more vulnerable to things in the environment. you should really try to get some sleep every night. the human body wasn't made to keep going 24/7

Doctors dont know exactly why, but there is a hormone that is released.
In adults, it repairs/rebuilds muscle/tissue.
In children and teens, it is very important for growth.
Lack of sleep clearly affects our thinking, or cognitive, processes. Sleep deprivation also affects us physically. Our coordination suffers. We lose our ability to do things with agility. Sleep improves muscle tone and skin appearance.

oh for many reasons, but with the American life as busy as it is, our need for sleep is sometimes inconvenient.
some things that sleeping does are:
1) rebuild proteins
2) replenish tissues of nutrients, oxygen, and chemicals
3) repair damaged tissues
4) entertain us as being cyclic beings
