I know you don;t want cut and paste but the map at this link will get you started: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:1759_map_Holy_Land_and_12_Tribes.jpg

Palestine has been a "country" at various times in the past. It's really more of a region, the the modern concept of countries gets fuzzy as you go back in history. But, yeah, there has long been a "Palestinian" people and their ancestral homelands go far beyond the present-day boundaries of Israel to include most of Lebanon and parts of Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. Back in the mid 20th century, Israel was carved out to give the Jewish people a country of their own, as their ancestral homelands were in the same area as the Palestinians. And, indeed, the Jews and Palestinians have been fighting with each other for thousands of years.

Up until the country of Israel was established, it was generally the Jews who, forgive my language, got their butts kicked by both Palestinians and Arabs in general. With the support of Europe and America, the Jews were finally able to defend themselves. When Israel was established, the Palestinians were also given their own territory...that being the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. But they didn't like that so they decided to attack Israel. (In 1967? maybe.) Of course, Israel fought back and occupied their territory. That occupation still goes on today.

It's a very complicated situation and wrongs have been commited by both Jews and Palestinians. The real fact of the matter is that, in general, Arabs of the region hate the Jews and if it were not for the support of Europe and America, Israel would be wiped off the map and the people living there would be killed. To some degree, the Palestinians deserved the butt-whooping they got from Israel some 50 years ago...but Israel has also been overzealous in their occupation of Palestinian territory since that time.

The real irony is that even though the Palestinain homeland extends well into Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, the Palestinians are not demanding those parts of their territory to be returned to them. They only want what Israel has. That points directly to the Jewish-Arab conflict that has persisted since before Christ.

How's that to get you started?

Don't be ashamed about not knowing about Palestine. Many people deny the land being proclaimed by the Palestinian people. Comprising of Jews, Arabs as well as Christians. It has been a feuded conflict for tens of thousands of years. Dating as far back as 10,000 BC. The area has been controlled by the Ottoman empire, Romans, etc... The country known as Palestine never became an independent state do to the Zionists movement of the 19th century. But enough of history.
To answer you question, it is the land that was known as the Canaan region at the eastern end of the Mediterranean sea. It extends east to the Jordan River, north to the border between modern day Israel and Lebanon, west to the Mediterranean, and south to the Ha-Negev desert aka (Sinai Peninsula) (i.e. Egypt), reaching the Gulf of Aqaba (Jordan). I hope this answers your question. If you have anymore please feel free to ask. Also I recommend you read the book Arabs and Israel for beginners : By Ron David... Best Regards......

Palestine (from Latin: Palaestina; Hebrew: פלשת‎ Pleshet, פלשתינה Palestina; Arabic: فلسطين‎ FilastÄ«n, FalastÄ«n) is one of several names for the geographic region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River with various adjoining lands. Many different definitions of the region have been used in the past three millennia.

Other English names for this geographical region include: Canaan (Hebrew: כנען‎), Land of Israel (Hebrew: ארץ ישראל‎ Erets Yisrael), Judea (Hebrew: יהודה‎ yehuda), Holy Land (Hebrew: ארץ הקדש Erets Ha-Kodesh‎; Latin: Terra Sancta; Arabic: الأرض المقدسة‎ al-Ard al-Muqaddasah[1]) and Cisjordan (not to be confused with the French term for the modern-day West Bank, Cisjordanie).

Palestine was the name given by the Romans to their formerly named Judea after the revolt by the Jews. It was based on the Philistines and used to humiliate the remaining Jewish population.

It's been used to refer to the area between the Jordan river and Mediterranean Sea since then.

It's has never been an independent country, it has always been part of an empire until Israel was formed in 1948.

Palestinians are a loose for example Yasser Arafat considered himself a Palestinian despite the fact he was actually Egyptian (his father was a wealthy Egyptian textile merchant).

The area that the Palestinian authority claim as their own land are the Gaza Strip (formerly part of Egypt) and the West Bank (formerly part of Jordan). The ruling party, Hamas, claims all of that plus the entire state of Israel and that is why their is currently an aid freeze from the EU, USA and other states.

Currently, there is no such entity called "Palestine" though there is an entitity called "Palestinian Authority" and people called "Palestinian Arabs".

Additionally, there has never been an independant state called Palestine.

What there has been was a designation of land called Palestine that was a colony of the British Empire and before that a colony of the Ottoman Empire. When Israel came into being and Jodan, Egypt, and Syria took the rest of the area, that Palestine ceased to exist.

Before Israel, the designation Palestinian was mostly applied to Jews who were residing there.
Afterwards, Israeli was used to apply to a Jewish or Arab (or other) citizen of Israel. Those Arabs who were not citizens of Israel and who lived in the area known as the West Bank and Gaza adopted the Palestinian label. Culturely, they are Arab.

I'm not too sure, either.

I THINK Israel used to be called Palestine, but then the Jews came back together in the mid-1900s, and it became Israel again.

Palestinians and Israelites are two different peoples who can't stand each other.
And right now, I THINK Palestinians and Israelites are occupying the same area (Israel) but on different sides.

No such thing as a country called Palestine. Those people are occupying Israeli land.
