I have a similar situation, but mine's a bit more manageable. I have a guy on my team who's gotten a bit used to easy environment we have, and consequently a bit lax sometimes when it comes to detail and addressing issues right away. Luckily, he's reasonable and easy to talk to.

I started by pointing out areas that he needed to work on - my company calls these "development points" :) Right now he's responding, so I wouldn't have to go to my next step, which would be to give him a project or assignment which I know would be tough and stretch his skills to the limit. But it is an option.

Don't know if the person you're talking about is a poor performer or not, otherwise easier to go along with the comments from the previous posters and start the paperwork trail to toss him/her.

You can't always. What you CAN do is to set clear performance expectations so that the employee knows what is expected of him/her. Make sure they are measureable and be specific about what you want (would you know what to do differently if your boss said, "be more responsible" or "have a better attitude"?)

If the employee doesn't do what you want, let them know right away where they fell short and what the consequences will be. If they continue to fall short...they need to take their spolt self elsewhere.

Have fun. :)

Demote them if at all possible. That is the quickest way to get someone's attention, make them start over and work their way back up or out the door.

stop helping him to do his job and let him sink & swim on his own.

If he wont swim, he needs to be fired - BUT make sure you have written up his errors and bad work, and make sure you give him his 3 warnings he is entitled to before he is fired.

That will CYA if he decides to sue.

Its not v.difficult....start giving them some responsible job...constantly monitor their work..& after successful completion...give them recognition in front of others..tell them tat u r proud of them.....they will feel better & will start wrkg by them own.
