Definitely. The justice system depends on people getting a fair defense presentation in court... their "day in court" if you will. The goal of a good defense lawyer isn't to get a guilty person off the hook. The goal is to see that justice is done for all concerned.
Yes, there are times when defense lawyers take cases and because of a reasonable doubt someone goes free when they have done something wrong. However, they usually end up in the system again for something else or worse crimes and don't get away with those. Also, one must remember that if there is a legitimate reasonable doubt as to a person's guilt, maybe they should be set free.
When a person sells his soul to the devil, to use your phrase, they get into a situation they cannot get out of or .. in the example of a defense lawyer, they defend someone against charges when they know without a doubt that the person is guilty.
The only time a person can truly know without any doubt a person committed a crime is when the evidence is such that there can be no doubt or that person witnessed the crime personally.
Criminal defense lawyers serve an important part in the system of justice. They must defend people to the best of their ability, and sometimes they defend people that they believe are guilty of whatever crime they have been charged with. But they do not know without any doubt that they are guilty without a signed confession of the crime and solid evidence that is undeniable. And because a person is legally assumed innocent, they play an integral part in seeing that justice is served in presenting the defense of people who have been charged with crimes.
I hope this explanation helps. One must remember that lawyers are people too, and they all have differing attitudes about what they do in this life. Some may have the attitude that it is their responsibility to get everyone they defend off the hook on whatever they've been charged with. I submit to you that in my opinion they may well have sold their souls. But those people do not represent the vast majority of lawyers who are concerned with the carrying out of justice.
Please note that this is my own personal opinion, and if you don't agree with me, that's okay.

Prosecutors are no different, really. Even they operate under rules and methods that are based on speculation and conjecture. Subject to opinions of so-called experts. The criminal defense attorney has to rely on the same rules and methods.
It all boils down to which side has the better presentation. An innocent can go to jail, or a criminal can get back out on the streets.

It's funny how people on Answers categorize things that they disagree with as "evil" and "wrong". You have your opinion, others have their opinions. Look at it from another point of view. You have been wrongfully accused of a violent crime. All of the evidence is circumstantial and coincidental (remember...you didn't do it). A talented defense lawyer clears you in trial.....did he sell his soul, or was he there for a reason?

It is not always that the accused may be guilty of crime, and everyone has a right to defend himself. if one works as a criminal defense lawyer he might help an innocent person who is wrongly accused.
One must do this duty honestly, of course!

very virtually no - 7 states nevertheless assist you "study the regulation" which permits you to paintings with a criminal expert even in spite of the shown fact that, the standards variety. In Vermont, as an occasion, you have achieved a minimum of three years of school in the direction of a level. Maine makes it possible for examining the regulation, yet demands sparkling attorneys to have 2 years of regulation college. you nevertheless could take the Bar examination to coach, and persons who study the regulation tend to fail at a critically larger fee than persons who circulate to regulation college. you will, of direction, be required to coach interior of those seven states when you consider that your license will in all probability no longer be prevalent in the different forty 3 states and DC when you consider which you will no longer have a level.
