Forget the online poetry contests. These are a scam.
Go to poetry readings and read them. Get to know other poets and get known in the community.

Ask other poets that are published how they get their stuff out their.

Publishing your own poetry book is the only way real writers are going to notice your work.

I would say start with submitting to webzines, then magazines then think about publishing a book. All of this is miserable uphill work, as even if your poetry is splendid, it will be rejected 99% of the time. In America poetry professors have formed a career network to publish and praise each other's work which excludes independent poets. Most editors will ask for your publishing resume before they take a look at your work. That's crap in my opinion, but that is the corrupt state of poetry publishing nowadays and the main culprits are the university professors who need to publish to keep their jobs and get ahead.

Post them online, put an ad in a newspaper, or submit them in a contest is the best advice I can give.
