first time i heard mine was 17 weeks. but babies can still hide from the little sonic aids they use so dont worry if you dont hear it. i went to the doctor on monday, im 19 weeks pregnant, as i have a kidney infection and he checked me over then couldnt find the babies heartbeat and ive never been so scared as i had a miscarriage 2 years ago. he refered me to the maternity hospital and they found it right away as the baby must have moved.

As early as 8-12 weeks. you can buy or rent your own doppler online or in a lot of maternity stores these days. A fetal doppler measures the fetal heart rate by emitting and receiving continuous ultrasonic sound waves and emitting the change or shift in pitch frequency of these sound waves. Every time one of these sound waves is sent the transducer (probe) pauses briefly and listens for the returning echo at which time the fetal doppler determines the depth and direction of each returning sound wave and converts the signal into the fetal heartbeat you hear. This heartbeat is not your baby's actual heartbeat but a reproduction.

With a regular doppler it is 10-12 weeks, usually closer to 12. With an ultrasound it can be heard a little sooner than that most of the time.

i am 12 weeks (nearly 13) and i havent heard my babies heart beat yet and i've had 2 ultrasounds. 1st at 9 weeks 2nd at 11 weeks. i was told i have to wait until i go to the hospital (booking in at 16 weeks) and i can hear it then when they put me on the doppler. it sucks but thats what i have to do (im from australia, i think it depends on where you are)

Usually around 13wks gestation with a doppler in the drs office. However for some, it can take a little longer.

Ultra sounds can detect it at 6weeks, thats when i heard my baby boys heartbeat for the first time and realized he was really there and really mine! (but its allready there at 5weeks.)
