Irony is like sarcasm, it's when your intended meaning is the opposite of the literal meaning. When you say one thing, but mean the opposite. For instance "Nice haircut!" said in a mocking tone to someone with a terrible haircut. Or in my case "Gee, I love my job!" Irony is also when things happen that we don't expect, the opposite of what we would expect or hope for. Often the worst possible outcome. Trying to think of an example...Like if I wash my car (which is rare!) then guaranteed it will rain that day or I'll get splashed with mud or something.

If you need it before the weekend then : (n) it is an expression of one's meaning by language of opposite or different tendency, esp. simulated adoption of another's point of view for purpose of ricdicule ; ill-timed or perverse arrival of event or curcumstance in itself desireable, due to the feigned good will & actual Malice of (Fate, circumstance, etc) ; use of language that has an inner meaning for a privileged audience & and outer meaning for the persons addressed or concerned (occasionaly including speaker of. TRAGIC ~) ; Socratic ~, simulation of ignorance as means of confuting adversary.

I would also suggest that during the weekend you should pick up the short story by O. Henry called "The Gift of The Magi" It is an ironic story that will make you weep for the sake of love. It is a quick lesson on irony, and I don't think you will ever forget it.
