i'm reading his poem by Wendell Berry it's called Manifesto: The mad farmer liberation front. there is this one sentence i just cannot understand it's:

when they want you to die for profit they will let you know.

what does that mean?

the sentence before that is, when they want you to buy something they will let you know.

I think this means that the Bosses may decide that, in order for them to make a big enough profit, they can't spend too much on safety measures or health insurance. If an occasional worker dies because of lack of safety precautions or lack of medical care, he will be dieing for profit.
The problem with this interpretation, is that the Bosses seldom do let you know that they are putting your life at risk.

It means you have no control -- even if you think you do

I am guessing without have read the poem that the people in this mad farmer liberation front think they belong to something because they believe in it, but they are being controlled by it just as they are the power they are fighting against.
