I have a Toshiba, less than a year old with a 'Centrino Duo'. Occasionally, in the middle of whatever, the screen will go out; black, not totally off, still glowing. It's still on. But I have to turn it off manually and restart for it get back going. What is this? How do I stop it from happening again?

p.s. It doesn't have the little white button/ push switch.

WOW! That's weird. Toshibas are usually very good, but it's probably just a lose wire, you should take it to a Toshiba store. That happened on my old laptop. But until you get it fixed, try not to shake the screen.

Can you hear the cooling fan running, make sure you not blocking the Air Vent. I have an IBM and was setting it in my lap. One day it got hot on my leg. I noticed my pants were blocking the vent. Now I sit it on top of a book. Now about my Screen, it getting old and is Cracked in a few places. Sometimes when I open the laptop my screen is real dim or has some weird looking stuff when Booting. I slap it on the back and it clear up. :-D

If your computer has a problem and it's turning off automatically,
then do this step by step and you'll see if it works properly.
right click the desktop
in the display properties, choose screen saver
you will see monitor power. click the power.
it will appear in the power options properties
under the power schemes, Home/Office Desk

the turn off monitor: choose never
Turn off hard disks: choose never.
It has to be all in "never" conditions.
and see if it works.
If it still doesn't work, then:

Your laptop needs to scan totally.
I got the same problem with my own computer too.
Whenever your laptop is in the right condition, then
try to download one of these software, you don't have to pay anything, just visit this useful site and you are free to download which ever software you are comfortable with:

http://www.superantivirus.com

it will help you to clean the inside of your laptop computer. then after you downloaded it and installed, make sure you restart the computer and then you can work with it.
cheers!

First off send it to Toshiba to get them to check it out and they will more than likely find the problem with it. If they cant fix it they will probably suggest something to do about it.
Good Luck with it.

Next time it does that take a look to see if your computer just happened to switch from AC power to Battery..my laptop was doing that to me also till i noticed it was a bad connection and my laptop was going from AC to Battery..and when it's in Battery mode the screen darkens..next time it goes a bit dark hit the Fn key .it's next to the ctrl key and while holding the Fn key hit the Arrow Up key ..your screen should brighten up..then you will be able to see if you are in battery mode or AC...

Sounds like it may be going into sleep mode. Have you contacted Toshiba?
