Wow I just got mine on Mon so I know all of this! There are two states which allow carrying with no permit. Alaska and vermont. There are only four "cities" which outlawed pistols. Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco and NYC. I am in Florida and my concealed carry permit is valid in 30 different states. This applies ONLY to carrying concealed. For instance, in Virginia you can legally carry a pistol on your hip exposed to everyone (kind of like the cowboys used to), in Florida however this is illegal with or without a permit. In Florida you concealed weapon may NEVER be exposed for anyoen to see. Hope this helped :)

Not necessarily, In some states you can open carry a gun with no license, in most you need a license to carry a concealed weapon. Alaska is the only state I know of that will allow you to carry a concealed firearm with no license of any kind.

The link below will give a description of what the exact laws are for each individual states. Many states have reciprocal laws meaning that some states recognize a license from another while some do not. The link will also list what states CCW license are valid in others.

In most states, you need a license to carry a concealed weapon. A license in one state gives you the right to carry in that state ONLY, unless the other state honors the license from the state where you are licensed.

Some states require you to have a permit just to own a gun, let alone carry one. Municipalities and cities may have rules that are more stringent than the state. Every state/locale has its own laws- you, as a gun owner, are responsible to educate yourself before buying/bringing/carrying a firearm in any state/locale.

Call the licensing authority in the state you are in to find out more, or in the state you are intent on travelling to. Find out what the controlling statute is, read it, know it, and live by it.

What you need is called a Carry permit, also called a concealed weapons permit. The laws vary by state, but i am fairly sure that all require some for of permit for you to carry. you can read all of the requirements each state has at the link provided. I live in PA, here you need a CWP, and its obtained from the county sheriffs office.

When it comes to laws, the emphasis in United States of America is on States.

Each state has its own requirements as well as laws governing not only the carry of a weapon but its use as well. Some states will even have differences within their own borders.

Vermont, for example, has almost no requirement whatsoever as carrying a weapon concealed there doesn't require a permit; L.A. and San Francisco basically require you to be white, famous and politically connected (I'm exagerrating somewhat, but no too much) while it is less difficult in most the rest of California. The majority of states offer a concealed weapons permit but each state has its own requirements as to who can get one and how (most require classes and a test).

A concealed weapons permit is not valid in any other state but the one that issues it unless: another state has reciprocity with the issuing state (check the local laws) or has decided to accept the permit of certain states (Michigan accepts permits from every state if I remember correctly).

A lot of states also offer non-resident permits. Generally, proof of such a permit in your own state is enough but, once again, it will vary from state to state.

The key is to check your laws as well as those of the states you may want visit. They cover not only how one may obtain a permit, but also where one may carry. It's also important to check the laws on self defense in your state as, again, they will not necessarily be the same as that of other states.

Check Packing.org and Handgunlaw.us for the latest updates.

If you do decide to obtain your own permit, do get training; not just what your state requires of you but more extensive training. Carrying a weapon for self defense is not something to do lightly and comes with extensive responsibilities.

I feel that it is my UN-A-LIEN-ABLE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to possess and carry any firearm that I wish, in any way that I wish. A concealed weapons permit is just another way for the "man" to collect revenue and to invade my PRIVACY. If everyone carried a concealed weapon I know that crime - all types of it - would drastically be reduced (Look at what happened in Australia!). Anyway: if something was to happen and you did not have your license; or you are not wise enough to defend yourself with the law, you can be held accountable, and unless you know what you are doing you should comply with the laws of your state(s), because if you mess up they can rack your *** up in a big way!

THIS IS WHY I HATE THE NRA. THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING TO MAKE STANDERD THE GUN PERMIT FROM STATE TO STATE LIKE A DRIVER'S LICENSE. I HAVE A PERMITE HERE IN VA. IF GO TO ANOTHER STATE I CAN BE ARESTED FOR CARRYING A GUN.

IT IS IMPOSSABLE TOO KNOW EVERY STATES GUN LAW GET STOP IN THE WRONG STATE AND YOU CAN GET SHOT BY THE OFFICER OR ARESTED. EVEN FROM COUNTY TO COUNTY IN YOUR OWN STATE. THAT IS WHY THE NRA SUCKS. DON'T JUST DON'T TELL ME IT'S MY RIGHT TO CARRY A GUN OR OWN ONE MAKE IT LIKE A DRIVER'S LICENSE GOOD FROM STATE WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS
