Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder which primarily consists of the fear of experiencing a difficult or embarrassing situation from which the sufferer cannot escape.
Agoraphobics may experience severe panic attacks in situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone. In severe cases, an agoraphobic may be confined not only to their home, but to one or two rooms, and they may even become bed-bound, or a recluse.
Agoraphobics are often extremely sensitized to their own bodily sensations, subconsciously over-reacting to perfectly normal events. For example, the exertion involved in climbing a flight of stairs may trigger a full-blown panic attack, because it increases the heartbeat and breathing rate, which the agoraphobic interprets as the start of a panic attack instead of a normal fluctuation.

Short and sweet:
Agoraphobia is a severe type of social anxiety disorder which is sufficient to debilitate someone socially. People often worry of open spaces where they cannot see an escape route; they can even pass out.
Little is known about it, but there is treatment. The best treatment is a councellor who pushes the person step-by-step. It's effective.
Good luck.

Because of its literal definition ("fear of the marketplace"), agoraphobia is often misunderstood as a fear of crowds or a fear of open spaces. The clinical definition of agoraphobia is a fear of situations or places "from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event" of a panic attack (DSM-IV).
Like panic disorder, agoraphobia is one of several anxiety disorders. Agoraphobia may occur with or without panic disorder, but it is most frequently seen with panic disorder. Panic disorder progresses to agoraphobia for about one-third of the people with panic disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
Symptoms and Treatments
Symptoms of Agoraphobia:
Individuals with agoraphobia:
Often experience depressed mood and exhibit anxious or fearful behaviors.
Experience anxiety about places or situations where escape may be difficult and may suffer panic-attacks.
Common problem situations include being outside of the home, traveling in a car, being on a bridge, or being in crowds.
Before diagnosis clinicians need to rule out other disorders such as specific phobias, social phobias, and post traumatic stress disorder.
Treatments for Agoraphobia
Psychiatric drugs such as SSRI’s and benzodiazepines can be effect when treating agoraphobics who also experience panic attacks. Treatments tend to be more effective when combined with behavioral therapy.
Systematic desensitization can also be effective. This approach involves gradual exposure to real-life feared situations.
