It is not a federal law.

However state by state you will find "Son of Sam Laws"

These laws prevent felons from profiting from their crimes.

First enacted by New York after David Richard Berkowitz received huge offers to publish his story.

Interestingly enough the state that first enacted a Son Of Sam Law is now a state that no longer has one on the books. In a rather famous case the Supreme Court struck down the law based on first amendment concerns. The case? None other then Henry Hill of Goodfellas fame.

On a side note it is likely that most of these laws could be struck down with any serious legal challenge....

Two other states, California and Nevada have had their "Son of Sam" laws struck down....
