i have a 1995 ford escort lx hatchback with an auto transmission. I was wondering if you can switch from overdrive to drive without stopping and vice versa? would this damage the transmission?

Keep steady pressure on the gas pedal and shift it. Do not let off the gas or push it down.

You can switch back and forth without stopping. As long as you don't put it in a low gear when you're going too fast, you'll be fine.

The cars that have the little button for O/D make it even easier.

Think of it as shifting from 4th to 3rd. You can let the trans do it for you, or do it yourself. It shouldn't hurt anything, unless you try to make it shift when you are going too fast for the lower gear.
