When you hyperventilate, the cells in your body begin lacking in oxygen. That is why you get light headed and get that tingly feeling in your hands.

because by hyperventilating you overstressed your heart, your lungs and your brain. Your brain instinctively wants to preserve itself so by hyperventilating, it was hoarding up blood and nutrients temporarily while in the "sudden panic mode" induced by hyperventilating.
