I wouldn't go to all that trouble. You can get personalized banners a http://www.Shindiz.com or http://www.StumpsProm.com

Hi:

I recommend you check out the really cool products at the online store DharmaTrading.com. This site has about everything you could ever want in the way of fabric and embellishments. They have some really cool "Good Luck" banners that you can decorate and insert bamboo poles into, and I think they probably have a duck cloth banner that ready to go, along with inkjet printable transfer material that you could probably easily print your banner in sections, and then iron it onto the cloth.

To get the lettering or artwork for your banner would probably be pretty easy. If you have Word, you can do some fancy stuff with the lettering and make each letter to be like a 8.5x11 size probably and print a test on plain paper. You could also probably modify it more in another application like Corel Draw or Photoshop if you wanted to get more arty with it. If you're uncomfortable with that, add a comment with what your text is, I'd be glad to try to help you with it. Hope this helps.

Military wives do a lot of these to welcome home husbands when their boat pulls in. The cheapest way is to buy a flat sheet and paint if. Pretty much any paint that is not washable works. How good it looks totally depends on the artist doing it.

If you had it drawn out it might be a good project for the first arrivals to work on while they wait for everyone else to get there. Or do something like a family tree with hand prints once everyone gets there and use it as the background for pictures.

Duck sometimes won't hold a transfer because it's too nubby. Why not just paint a sheet? You could print your letters really big and dark, and trace them thru the sheet. Painting with dye is sometimes an interesting effect.
