I've redefined "on time" to mean "when I get there".

I was actually early and you weren't here. So I went for a walk and this homeless guy asked for some change. I only had a Twenty but felt bad for him so I went out for a Popsicle so I would have some change for him. Well, did you know getting Popsicles this time of year is easier said than done? I had to go to five places. I lost track of time but I did finally get some change and give the homeless guy a couple bucks and a Popsicle so in the end, isn't that all that matters?

Situations beyond my control.
Other important matters.
Life and death situations, emergencies.
Traffic jams.
Does not happen,[ well only about 15 minutes late on a regular basis] too often, mostly dutiful , but it will happen once in a while. The 15 minutes late is a situation beyond my control, and one that I need to watch, for my personal safety as well as for my job protection.

Late for what? I wasn't late for anything today...but I was almost late but it wasn't my fault...I was ready like 15 minutes before my ride got to my house.

well, I was on my way out the door when a giant panda bear stopped me and so I had to wrestled it but I wasn't strong enough so I just gave it some pie. Then, I came across my long lost great grandmother's cousin's sister's daughter's friend's brother's wife's son and he just HAD to chat and I didnt have the heart to say no so I just talked with him until he went away. Then, I got lost so I had to look for a map but I couldnt find one so I asked a bum where my destination was. He gave me pretty good directions but I still couldnt find my way until my 3rd grade teacher saw me and gave me a ride.

Well...I was walking to school and every time I passed a certain house the dog would jump off the porch and come at me and follow me and bark and bark. Yes, I was always afraid of him. This time he came up and bit me on the leg. I walked the other way to get away from him and had to walk two miles out of my way to get here. See, look at my leg where he bit me.

The question is not " Why I was late" the real question Is why did you notice?
