You don't say if this is your first bike or not.

If it is, Harley tends to be an expensive first bike. And most of them would probably be too big for a first bike.

Harley is a good bike, but in my opinion it's over priced.

You can get really good Honda's, Kawasaki's, Yamaha's and Suzuki's at a much cheaper price, and all will perform in my opinion, just as well if not better than some of the Harley's.

If you are just starting out, first thing you should do is to take a motorcycle safety course.
the cost ( about $250) is well worth it. they'll teach you all the basics and a bit more. Then upon completion and considering you pass the course, you will automatically have your Motorcycle classification. Just go to the DMV and they will upgrade your license without testing.

I would start on a 600cc or less and make it a used one. Chances are, YOU ARE going to fall over . LOL It would be much nicer to dump an old used bike rather than a brand new bike.
Look in your local paper or on eBay or cycletrader.com. you'll have a wide variety of bikes to choose from.

Good luck and good riding.

Honda - not cool. Reliable. Effortless - nice, smooth powerband. Quiet...this is good on long rides. Good brakes and corners well.

Harley-Davidson - expensive. Noisy. Tiring, due to both noise and vibration. Terrible handling - most have only 31 degrees of lean available...usually much less when moving, with the weight of the rider. Underpowered and overweight - a "dresser" weighs about 950 lb (dry weight.) But they look so cool!

About the only thing that H-D has going for it is noise (if you're into that sort of thing) and styling - but these are very big pluses. Many Harley riders know these sore points, but ride them, anyway - the cool styling is worth putting up with all the other little problems. I guess it all depends on what you're into.

I've ridden both Harleys and Hondas (and Suzukis, for that matter) for years - both are good, but both have a different function, and go about doing the job in very different ways.

The choice is yours.
