Simple Answer - A Good OL
Proof - look what the Jets did - last year they had the 3rd worst record - they drafted and started two rookies offensive linemen and wow they made the playoffs
If your OL is sad your running game will suck - than the defense blitzes more people and your QB has too much pressure and he sucks
I am a Raiders fan and I hope they draft JOE THOMAS 6'6 311 and runs a 4.8 !!! but if they dont the Lions should pick him up and another OL in the 2nd round and they could go from zero - playoffs just like the Jets (everyone doubted Chad Pennington just like Kitna but you cant judge a qb with a bad OL)

One word... TALENT. They have none. I mean it's not like they're underachieving. THEY HAVE NO ONE!!! They have a mediocre QB in Kitna, a young talented receiver in Roy Williams, an iffy back in Kevin Jones and Tatum Bell. (Denver has a way of making every back look like Barry Sanders) who know what Bell will be with Detroit's O-Line. On defense, can you tell me one player who is an impact player? The closest the Lions have is Ernie Sims, who could end up being a standout LB. Other than that they have NO ONE!! Dre Bly is gone. They signed some DB I've never heard of to replace him. Corey Redding is decent. I don't really consider him a standout. That's it. They need talent and that's the responsibility of the GM. I don't care who it is. If you can't draft well and attract free agents, you're not going to get it done.

New ownership and new QB - look at what the Patriots did under Mr. Kraft and Drew Bledsoe (who laid the foundation for Tom Brady and the 3 Super Bowl rings).
The Ford family has failed and needs to sell the team to bail out the family business. Millen has done the best he could given what the Ford family gave him to work with.

Offensive line help, a commitment to the Mike Martz offensive system, and of course sending Matt Millen to Oakland.

Get rid of that GM Matt Millen or whatever his name is. He has been the worst for that team. All the decisions in the Draft, free agency, etc. are made by him. He is a parasite to that club.

to draft an offensive lineman first round, a defensive lineman in the second, and gamble on either troy smith or chris leak. more liekly troy smith, ohio st football is more similar to the nfc north than flordia, and notre dame. then maybe a blocking tight end.
