How does the point system work for the bracketts in March Madness?

It all depends on your bracket. Some award 1 pt for correct picks in the first round, 2 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd, 4 in the 4th, 5 in the 5th, 6 in the sixth.

Some give 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. Some just give one point per correct answer. It just depends.

Just check the rules of your bracket as it'll make a difference on where you take your risks (guesses) vs. staying more conventional in your picking.
