I have realized that it could have probaly been avoided if I kept up a pace meaning I started the track running towards the front of the pack and ended up towards the back by the time I was finished.

This ever happen to you?

Any way to speed up the so recovery? Or do I have to just wait for the stiff feel to go away?

A couple of days and the stiffness will be gone. Do some light stretches and keep moving, even a light workout as this will speed up the recovery process.

Your legs are probably stiff because you haven't been stretching enough! (at least that's my reasoning about why MY legs hurt from running when I started training again last week!) ... stretch and warm up really well before practice, stretch after practice, stretch at least once before you go to bed (maybe once after dinner, once right before bed), and stretch in the morning right after you wake up. It doesn't have to be anything extensive, just 5 minutes or so (except for before/after practice... you want to do it a little longer then). Also, drinking a lot of water/gatorade/juice/etc. will keep you hydrated and also prevent you from feeling so sore. The pain will go away soon, I promise!

it will last a couple of days, best way to prevent it it to stretch. before you run stretch the muscles to loosen them and increase flexibility. after you are done walk a while to cool them down and then stretch again, the stretching helps the blood flow which increases the speed the the various toxins are removed from the cells and the oxygen on other nutrients are taken to them.

Take an epsom salts bath (get it from the drugstore) and take an aleve before you go to bed. It should reduce your stiffness within 8 hours.

Keep up the good work.

stiffness isnt really an injury, its more like a side effect of running...it might go away soon and it might not. just rest and you will feel better but my advice is get used to it!

3 days.

stretch,
warming up your muscles before you stretch will stretch them better( do a light jog or some calisthenics like skipping really high, grape vine, etc) athlete.

warm baths with epsom salts will help to relax your muscles.
