It actually depends on the individual. Some people who get nervous or upset about something will actually laugh rather than cry. There is a name for it but I don't recall what it is. It would make sense to laugh if we are sad so we could kick in some more endorphins. Have a good one. Mmm

According to me laughter is an effusion of relief. Laughter is the biological manifestation of the state of mind in which the person feels extremely relieved about his/her position in the universe. We laugh when we see someone else in an extremely inferior survival position for ex when someone does something extremely stupid or we laugh when we suddenly realise that our survival situation can be or is extremely secure. Sadness comes when we realise that our survival is not that easy. This may happen when we see a sad situation that we identify with, i.e we can easily see ourselves in that sitution or that we are ourselves in that situation. In such a case how can we laugh when we are sad. We as normal human beings are not biologically wired like that.

Because the body needs to express different emotions. Crying can be as important as laughter. Some people do laugh when sad as a coping mechanism. Though to be fair would you want to laugh?

That is one of the smartest questions I've ever heard. It's almost like asking why babies cry right after they're born. I think it's because laughing is loud and obnoxious for the situation thats so grave. Just my thought, but truly an ingenuitive thing.

from the time we are born we are constantly immitating what we see and hear. it is the natural process of learning to immitate. the reason we think things are funny and knowing when or when it isnt appropriate to laugh or show other emotions is all learned.
part of it though is instinct like when babies cry right when they're born, its instinctive because they are helpless and are crying for their mothers. that may be why people cry now because they're seeking help.
hope this helped some!

We, being of the same species, share common instinctive reactions to different situations. No matter what country you're in, you'll always be able to communicate emotions with other humans. So, maybe it's like a survival thing or something..

Because it is natural to cry when something is sad. That would be a false cover up emotion to laugh.

Because we are educated in this way. we are told when are happy, we laugh, when we are sad, we cry, but this has physocological and scientific ground, try to laugh when you are sad, probably it is very hard. Therefore, it tells us, laughing when happy and crying when sad is more effective way of expressing feelings, and let out of the sadness and happiness.

Well, some people laugh when something or someone is sad .. I guess it's just the way our brain works. It's different with some people with schizophrenia.
