I know that in the United Federation of Planets the military arm is StarFleet, however, StarFleet is more of a naval force. I wondered if there was any infantry or ground units, aside from the few shipboard Marine detachments?

During the era of Captain Archer, they did have specially-trained armed troops, the MACOs. However, we only see them attached to a Starship, not protecting the planet's surface on the ground.

The whole Gene Roddenberry vision of the future wasn't meant to include any officers specifically trained for combat, with no other purpose other than to fight. Undoubtedly, there would be an equivalent of an "Army" in any century, but this is not touched on, on Star Trek.

As you say, Starfleet is the futuristic-version of the Navy. Does anyone remember "Starship Troopers"? In that film, they definately had crew to pilot the ship, and then a seperate crew/troops to land on the planet and fight. Nothing like this was shown on Star Trek.

No ground troops, remember their mission, to seek out new life and new life forms. Also, they never engage anybody until either they are attacked or threatened. Besides, they have the Enterprise which can wipe out masses of people on planets with one phaser blast.

Kirk kicks *** on the ground. But seriously, if you can defeat your enemy from space, why would you even want ground troops?
