What's a pet friendly way to keep ants off the food mat?

I used ant traps - I can't remember the brand, i think it was Raid? It was little plastic things that you put on the floor, it has a daisy flower pattern on the top, and the ants go in to get food to bring back home and they die there. Watch if you have dogs though, the traps smell like peanut butter.

They sell food dishes at petsmart that are designed to keep bugs out of it.

I live in South Texas, Fire Ant Capital of the World!!! I use a pet dish that I purchased at Pet Smart that keeps ants out of my Cat's dish. It does work!!!!

Put your pet bowl in the middle of a tray of water, I use this method and no longer have ants in the food, they won't cross the water.

Sprinkle the floor with a small of equal, or any other sugar substitute. A friend of mine runs an ant killing business and this is what he uses. Equal, sugarine etc are highly toxic. A small amount from an equal sachet is enough to kill a small pet mouse within 12 hours.

i have heard ants hate plain cinnamon. works great outside. i found it messy. this year has been insane with ants!!! i am going to try a few ideas from others. might have to use ant traps. i have bought grants ant traps and it killed off an old colony of ants. we have a new colony this year. ants are also attracted to water try to keep things clean and dry.

Baking soda. Put it everywhere you see ants. It'll get rid of them, but is harmless to humans and pets. (It really works - I've used it more than once!) :)
