I just quit my job in search of a new job, but I'm thinking about going back to school. So I was thinking of collecting unemployment so I can go back to school. Does getting umemployment look bad on my record? Does jobs look down on that?

It won't look bad, because you can't do it.

Unemployment insurance only covers you for INVOLUNTARY unemployment.

If you're claiming unemployment you only have a certain amount of time until the government stops sending checks.

Unemployment benefits lasts about 6 months and they check periodically on your attempts in finding a new job. If you are not looking for a new job then they'll stop sending unemployment checks.

They want you to get a job and try to get you to attend meetings and check on the status of your employment.

A lot of people work temporary jobs for 6 months then quit and claim unemployment. That's what they like to do. It should not affect the way jobs perceive your choices in finding better opportunities for your career.

There is no "record" of unemployment benefits that
a potential employer would be able to see.

Even if you advertised that you were doing it, you
should know that just about every actor or actress
you can name has, at one time or another, collected
unemployment. The industry LIVES off of it.

No, it is no shame. Why would you pay into it
if it was a shame?

I don't know how unemployment works in your state but here you wouldn't be eligible for it since you quit your job. Also to be eligible you have to be actively looking for and be available for work in order to continue getting it if and when you do get unemployment. You may want to check on your eligibility before you make a decision....Good Luck...

You have a valid reason for collecting unemployment benefits. I don't see why you should be overly concern if it looks bad. There will always be opposition camp, do what you feel comfortable and ignore all gossips. Besides, there is no need for your to broadcast that you're on employment benefits.

"Jobs" aren't privy to your unemployment earnings. You pay into your UI account when you work, as does your employer at the time. If you're unemployed and meet the criteria to collect UI, then you're eligible to collect. It will be your little secret with the state. :)

you will lose your benefits when you go back to school and or quit looking. You have to play by their rules not yours. It all depends on how long you have been out of work that makes the difference.
