There are more & more adjusting the minimum age by from 6 months to 2 years. Contrary to Tax Maven's rant the reasoning has NOTHING to do w preventing young folks from working. Why can't they walk, take a bus , ride w a friend/sibling/parent working is still an option without driving a car!!

And though the insurance rates are VERY high for teens (justifiably so!!), this isn't the reason either. Reducing car count is also a non factor for the most part.

The reason is that are young drivers are killing themselves in obscene numbers while operating vehicles, & the numbers keep climbing !! The thought was giving a few more months or years will allow for a more mature decision maker behind the wheel of these 2000+ pound vehicles of potential death & destruction. Especially since alcohol has been a factor in an increasing number of these fatalities & severe injuries .

How ever many it is, it is TOO MANY. The freaking government is hellbent on making absolutely certain that no one can enter the workforce until they are at least 18, but I think they'd prefer 30. It is foolish. They are just trying to guarantee full employment by keeping people helpless longer.

Btw, there is a good discussion of this "extending childhood" in John Taylor Gatto's "The Underground History of American Education".

Anything less than 50 is wrong. 18 should be the age - 21 is a bit much though.

I don't know why they stopped there...21 would have been much better.
