We live in a passive society. We live in the "ME" generation.
We only get involved when the issues concern only the parts of our own lives. Only the people who have members of their families involved in the war speak out about their concerns of the war. The people who are affected or have family members affected by cancer only scream about what's wrong with cancer research or the FDA, not getting the drugs or the treatments out fast enough to help them. We all pick our own battles to be proactive in and there are far too many battles to be fought by so little amount of people concerned with the issues

I would say that I agree AND disagree.
I disagree because we hear on the news everyday about violence all around us. Even the games our children are playing. We have a serious problem in our community right now with parents getting violent at their children's ball games. To the point we have police at every game to control the parents. That is pretty sad and definitely not passive.
I do agree with the statement in that I think it has more to do with people not getting involved in community issues. Such as tax or fee increases, new laws, etc. I work in the community service field & I see it all the time. People don't want to be involved and then complain that they don't know what's going on. We recently had an issue with parking in our city. People complained to me that they didn't know the new regulations. They were printed in the newspaper for 2 months (several articles because it was a controversial issue), announced on the radio for several days AND they received notices on their cars. I still heard "I didn't know about it". They all claimed that they don't read the paper or listen to the radio. I just tell them that it is their responsibility to be informed and now you know. Pay your ticket!
Probably more information than you anticipated, but I do feel that it is our responsiblity to be informed and it's nobody elses fault if we aren't.

We do not live in a passive society because many people are doing many things.
We do, though, live in a permissive society insofaras people are permitted to do wrong without rebuke or censure. This is the bane of modern society.

AGREE... People who can actually change something are totally content with the type of society... And why would they put themselves in the bad positions, with no USE of that..?!
The system is co rumped, wrong, and only people with power(read:money) are living free...in some way..!!! And if you say something against (that could seriously damage the syst. than you're not the part of the society any more..SAD!!!!!)!!!

I have to agree that we do. In our new society we are so involved in our personal space that we (they) have little interest in the large picture. I think too that many people have lost trust in small and large government and choose not to be part of it.

I agree.
Look at:
1.George Bush stealing 2 elections and no one peeped.
2. We are in a war based on greed, money and oil against an imaginary enemy and everyone puts "We support our Troops" magnets on their SUVs.
3. Tx. Gov Rick Perry mandated Cervical Cancer Vaccine for little girls age 9 and up and no one said a word.
These are only small examples of the apathy of US citizens.
Unless people begin to speak up and become assertive in protecting their right to live w/out government interference, we will soon be living in a dictatorship.
Good luck

Yes, people are too afraid and/or insecure to take chances. Some people are doing everything in their power just to hold their OWN lives together.

i think we live in a blind society, people walk (and drive) around all day with tunnel vision. a world of followers, blind leading the... you know. parents trying to shield their children from the truth of our aggressive society.
