I understand how you feel.
When I used to play ball (many years ago), I was once converted from third base to second base, because the coach's son wanted to play third. It was obvious that I was better, but that did not matter. The son was lefthanded but that did not matter either. I think that was the first and the only time that I saw a lefthanded thirdbaseman. But what can you say - he was the coach's son.

I suggest that you continue to work hard - regardless of the position you are given. You should show your interest to first base, but should never say anything about being better than the coach's son or openly express doubts about the coach's decisions. If the coach's decision was entirely due to favortism, this will not get you anywhere. But if you continue to work hard and prove to everyone that you are better, at some point the coach will be forced to give up neglecting the facts.

On a separate note, are you on the bench because of this - or have you been converted to a diferent position as I have in the past? Because if you are not being benched, "favortism" may not be the reason. Yes, if you just compare first base, you might be better than his son. But how about if you look at the whole team? For example, you may be as good a second baseman as you are a first baseman. His son may be a decent first baseman but a lousy second baseman. If I were the coach, I would put the son on first and you on second.

I don't know the situation so I will leave it here... Good luck!! and be positive.

You don't say what level you are playing. Many youth teams suffer from the coach playing his son at SS, because everyone wants their son to play there. When I played HS, I suufered the same thing as you, except it was SS that the coach's son played. No matter the 6 error innings and 10 error games, his son was the shortsop and he would grow into it.

But enough of my whining about the past!

The best bet is to play wherever you can and make a contribution to the team. Then resolve to try out for first base when you play for another coach, if that is really where you want to play.

Remember, though, that first base is often assigned to a hard hitting player with less than exemplary fielding skills, so if you are an excellent defensive player, you may contribute more to the team in another position.

Well, as a former coach, I can tell you that I always liked players that worried about the team before themselves. So, maybe you should stop worrying about where you play in the field and start worrying about how you can help your team.

Often times coaches like to try to put the 9 best players on the field. So, if his son is not better than you, but is one of the 9 best players, he probably wants both of you on the field. And if his son can't play any other position as effectively as you could, its best for the TEAM that his son plays 1st base and you play somewhere else. IT'S ABOUT THE TEAM. IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU AND THE COACHES SON!

You may have tried this already, but i suggest that you speak with your coach's son and tell him what you are feeling. however it is crucuial that you dont tell him that you think that you are better than him. tell him that you want to play at first base for a game or two. hope he is cool with it. and then once you are there playing first base work as hard as you can to show the coach just how good you are, and maybe then you can ask the coach's son if he minds letting you play first for good

Is there another position you can play? Is there a reason why it has to be first base (ie your arm isn't strong enough to play another position or you aren't athletic enough)? I guess I would tell you to try and find another position where you can play and show the coach how good of a player you really are - a smart coach would play the best players regardless of if they are related to him or not. If he find out you can play the game he will find a spot to get you in the lineup.

See,this is whats wrong with the sport today.Players and parents have to put up with coaches that the only reason they do it is so there son-daughter gets all the playing time. The advice I can give you is just to do your best at all times, sooner or later you will get your chance to shine.Keep working hard and don't let certain obstacles deter you from playing the game you LOVE

Learn another position, and bust your butt to be the best there as well. It is to your advantage, and then, if 1st is your spot, take it over when good ol' daddy is no longer your coach.

Confront him. And if and when you get the chance to play first, take full advantage as you would if you had to battle him for the spot.
