Saludos.

American's are used to watching higher scoring, higher impact sports. Soccer isn't popular for many of the same reasons hockey isn't that popular in the states. The scores are low, there are rules that people don't get like offsides. And unless your a fan you don't really care to watch cause it doesn't seem like anything ever happens. many fans watch soccer for the skill of play, the atmosphere, and the tradition. If you ever go to Europe they always ask who your team is. While in Spain I had to pick between Sevilla and Betis. You pick a team and are die hard. You pick your players and are a die hard fan. You support your country and are a diehard fan. they eat drink and sleep "football". Most Americans just don't understand the game. They think that the players are week and there isn't much contact. Of course most have never wathched a real game and seen the physical side if the game. Soccer is very physical and the players have to be extremely fit. I think that Soccer will continue to build slowly in the USA because you have to really learn the game to appreciate it, and most won't take the time. At the very the MLS is gret to watch in the summer and is a heck of a lot funner to watch then one of the 110+ baseball games each team plays in the summer.

you are right.
Normally people have different views on any kind of sport. and the fact is :"no one can love all sports at once". But history also plays a part. Normaly people tend to like what they see everyday, what they are used to, and mostly what they are good at. I know you can agree with me that americans are thenumber one basketball players in the whole world. and that is the main reason why they love it. Imagine howlong it would take to introduce basketball to a country like brazil! will it ever replace soccer? i guess no. so the same thing with soccer in usa.
America has not been so succesful in soccer during the past years, if you read soccer history , you will find that they were once defeated by Norway (11-0) in 1948 ! the biggest defeat ever! but ever since then, there has been some improvements, and they also has demolished some teams. in fact in 2000 they won (7-0) against barbados! which is a good indication of improvement, and they are now ranked 28th in the world rankings.
myself i see a good indication that soccer is geting popurality little by little. it will take a long time but we have to patient.
i hope you are helped!

It's boring. I know a lot of people who hate baseball for the same reason. The real question is, with faster moving, higher scoring, harder hitting sports out there, why does the rest of the world love soccer so much?
But I guess the real answere is, you love what you know. Soccer has been huge in other countries ofr a long time. Children are raised on it so they love it. Children in America are raised on football, baseball, basketball and hocky so these are the games they love.

The American culture is infatuated with the phrase "America for Americans." They refuse to allow any other "non-American" hobby take over their apple pie and hot dog eating hobbies. They simply are taught (by society) that baseball, football (American), and basketball are the only true American sports. And in order to show they are superior they say that other sports including soccer are stupid, boring, etc. The nation itself carries the "we are tough" stereotype and if other sports are as tough or tougher than American sports then the nation itself is degraded of top dog. Why don't we hear Americans say anything negative about Rugby? Because its is tougher and it isn't American. In other words, they choose which battles to fight and which ones to run from.

Just for the record, I am American and love football (soccer). Football is growing here, but still has a long way to go. If I understood Mixi's Spanish correctly, he's right, American's are "frontrunners" and love what they can win at. If USA ever wins a world cup, everybody here will suddenly be football fanatics and experts. He's right.

I am american (thought I do not like the US Nationa Team) and I love futbol. I believe americans don't like soccer (and yes, they do not like it) for many reasons.
1-They have a short attention span. Football, Basketball, and Baseball have breaks in which you can shift your focus on other things for a while. Futbol has only a halftime after 45 minutes. The also like seeing points scored. They changed rules in the NFL and NBA so that it is harder to defend and easier to score. They like things to come easily.
2-They do not like to think/analyze. They like things that are apparent. If Football, Basketball, and Baseball the ones scoring usually are playing the best. In futbol, since scores tend to be low, you need to pay attetntion and analyze the game to see who is playing the best.
3-They like claiming who is the best. The NFL, NBA, and MLB are the best leagues in their respective sports. Everyone wants to play in those leagues. In futbol, there are many great leagues but no clear "best." If the debate over the best in the world (club) is not settle in one great contest (Superbowl, NBA Championship, World Series), then why follow? They want to know who is best, not determine it.
4-They don't care about the rest of the world. We lose the World Baseball Classic and the Basketball World Championship, but the Americans don't care. They have the MLB and NBA. If they won, they'd care.

Maybe it is because they are brought up in the way that they are only exposed to this sports(baseball, basketball and football) and not being exposed to soccer at all. Maybe, it could also be their diet or either not exposed to lots of physical type of trainings. I hope this answers your question.

I'm an American, we do not hate soccer. we just are not interested in it because it is a slow game (no scoring). i personally like soccer because the majority of American do not watch it because of the reason above.

i think that most americans not interested in it because it's slow and boring, and their history doesn't involve many sports that use feet, most popular sports in USA involves hand coordination, such as hockey, baseball, american football. but then again, they are all are slow sports, it took almost a whole day to watch it. and the term foot-ball for the american football is just not right, they only use their foot to score field goals!
