I didn't have any theft protection, what kind I do to get out of paying the whole total $1,800 for a laptop that was stolen 2 days after I got it??

Of course you still have to pay for it... it's not Dell's fault that your laptop got stolen, it's yours. Just think about it... if a friend of yours borrows $800 from you and then gets robbed a day after getting the money, does that friend not still owe you the $800? It's not your fault they were robbed. The issue is your credit. If you do not pay them they can screw your credit report and then you will not be able to buy a house, car, or anything else requiring good credit. Your best recourse would be to contact the police department and search the local pawn shops for your laptop.

I am assuming you filed a police report immediately. If, by some odd feat of negligence you did not, do it now.

Then contact Dell and give them the details, including the police report number and the officer to contact.

There may have been some insurance included in your contract with Dell that may help in a situation like this.

You are still liable for the payments. Failure to pay will cause adverse information to be placed on your credit report...at the very least.

My guess is that they should compensate you in some way. I mean it has only been two days. I think you can still purchase the insurance and report to Dell several days later. When you buy an expensive item like that, you have several days if not weeks to decide if you want the insurance or not. I know for a fact that works with cell phones. Research into it. Chances are you might be compensated for the loss in one way or another. Good luck!!!

Legally you owe the balance due to the finance contract between you and Dell.

The laptop MAY be covered under a homeowners or renters personal property policy. You can try that route if you have a police report to provide the insurance company.

Good Luck

Sadly without that protection, you may still have to make the payments. How can you positively prove that it was stolen? Call Dell ASAP!! Tell them of the situation. They are the only ones that can answer your questions.

Yes you do. File a report to the police. Might be out of luck man. I would call dell and inform them of the situation. Hopefully some sort of insurance will cover it, but probably not.

Yes you do, but if you paid for it via credit card, Visa and M/C often have short range theft insurance on items you buy with them...
Check with the people financing it, whether they have automatic theft insurance included.

If you had sold it to me, and I'd promised to pay you for it, wouldn't you want me to pay you what I'd promised? Would it make any difference to our agreement that I no longer had it? A contract is a contract. You are obligated to pay. Check with your insurance, of course. I hope you can get compensated. If not, you still owe the money. Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
