The truck will run fine. If the truck still has refrigerant in it, it will have to be removed by a professional. Removing the a/c components will not affect how the truck runs.

Why remove? Why not fix the AC. If ya remove all smog stuff the truck will not run any better, it will probably run worse or not even start. A free flowing cat converter and no muffler will add a little piss to it. YYou got to rip out all the wiring and the computer and change the manifold to a carb(Manifold + carb is how much)? More than what it will cost to fix the AC. Let out all the gas by pushing in the valves on the AC lines and convert to R134. If it has a leak the O rings are fairly cheap (just don't overtighten the fittings)

the truck will run but leave the egr valve as it actually helps reduce crankcase pressure from building up and keeping the pistons from cycling down as easy as it would without the pressure. Opening air conditioner lines will give off r12 so watch out removing the ac stuff. If the truck has an air pump with lines running to the exhaust manifolds , cut the pipes so you can crimp the tubing shut, they used to sell a solid fitting for removing air pump fittings but stopped some years back

the ac stuff can be removed but some of the smog stuff needs to stay (example,if the egr doesn't work the engine will 'ping') that 86 had est timing so all that will have to be swapped

i own a shop an yes you can take everything off it,I'm assuming your going to be using a hei distributor in it,and if so you don't need none of that stuff,by going with an hei distributor you wont need none of the computer stuff either, all of that can be done away with, and the gages in it hooked up strait, its an easy job though,i have did about 5 of those things like that ,and every tI'me i get one fixed the way i like it someone wants to buy it,so im not doing any more right now,but you and him should be able to do this real easy, good luck with it ,have fun,i did on mine.
