Every time I put in a CD my computer couldn't recognize it as it being in there. It didn't use to do that. Except, one time it did recognize it as it being inside. I tried to rip the CD on WMP and it would rip then stop. Then I got the CD out and it had this big huge scratch that was not there before, because it was a new CD. Now, it is making this really weird noise everytime I open it and close it.

If it's making noise, that's not good. The internal parts of a CD/DVD are very cheaply made--mostly plastic and nylon. It is probably time to go shopping for another drive. Sometimes you can remove them and dismantle it enough the see if there's something lodged inside. Do you have a kid that likes hiding things? I found a matchbox car in my VCR tape slot.

First, how old is your CD drive?
Second, as you may know there are several types of CD's out there today and your drive may not by the kind that could detect all of them.

So, I would suggest you go to your favorite store and buy at least one each of the existing discs; that is,
CD R
CD RW
CD DVD
DVD+R
DVD-R
Etc.

Ask a knowledgeable sales person to show you all types available that would probably work with your existing drive.
Try each one of them and see if your drive detects any; if not, then your only solution would be to replace the old drive with a new one. However, the noise you report, is not a good sign and your drive may have been damaged. In such a case, you will need to get a new one any way you look at it.

Good luck

If there was a big huge scratch on the disc, then there is something loose, or there was something stuck in there. Since you mentioned the noise also, this is probably what it is. Try looking around inside to make sure that nothing is broken. If you cannot find anything in there, then it is time for a new drive.

It sound like you have kids and they are using it as a piggy bank.
You can either take it out and then appart, or out and bin it. If anything, get the money back.
