She was the wife of President James Madison, she was in residence when the British burned the Whitehouse (saved many things from the residence), and was noted for being the first to serve ice cream there (cherry vanilla - hence the name white house ice cream).

However, probably her most lasting achievement was her rescue of valuable treasures, including state papers and a Gilbert Stuart painting of President George Washington, from the White House before it was burned by the British army in 1814.
