I am getting ready to start a new job next week. I am forty years old, so I have done this once or twice. Here's what I try to do everytime I start a new job. First of all, I remind myself that everybody at this place of work has been in my shoes, the newby. Nobody likes having to be trained, or enjoys looking like they don't know what they are doing. I will go in on Monday morning looking and feeling great with a smile on my face so others know I am excited to be there and try my best. I will be patient with myself, try to use all my skills that I have learned in the past, and most of all I'll be sure to have a sense of humor, because I am 100% sure that I will screw up about a million times before I learn this job as well if not better than I have in the past. I wish you luck too!

Smile, be friendly, act confident, and take a LOT of notes. If you don't remember anyone else's name, get to know the receptionist, the admins, the janitors/facilities guys, and a couple of folks in the computer department. Those folks can make or break you. I'm a high level exec and believe me those are the first people I get to know when I start a new gig.

What NOT to do - get into the gossip pool. You don't know enough yet to beware of the sharks...so smile sweetly and let it be known that you haven't gotten to know anyone well enough yet to want to contribute to the rumor mill.

Observe. Observe everyone's attitude and see how best you can go along. Don't try to offer too much just yet. Analyze the different personalities and be a chameleon.

Just pay attention, be friendly and do the work you are expected to and everything will fall into place. Good Luck.
