I'm starting to write a novel, which I've wanted to for a while. Anyway, it's set around a bushfire. Should I write about:

A - A real bushfire that happened a few years ago, do lots of reasearch and make it realistic, but risk getting facts wrong and upsetting people,

B - A real town, but a fake bushfire (so it's somwhat believeable), or

C - A fictional town (and bushfire), which I have more freedom with, but may not engage the audience as much.

I would love to hear your opinions!

I would research the situation, but change the names or situations as you see fit. That way you're creating realism without being tied down to a documentary style novel.

A real town, like esk, with a fake bushfire.. or a real town thats had loads of minor bushfires but write about a fake 'big' fire. :) Bryce Courtenay wrote an amazing novel about a real town and a fake bush fire.

Personally, I think you should combine all three! You could take real scenarios and ideas from a real bushfire, set it in a real town, and let your imagination run free. :)

Entirely fictional. That way you can set it whenever you want to and you have the freedom to make up people and streets, etc. without having to worry about getting it "right."

C. by all means! Let your obvious imagination go wild!

You have to enjoy what you're writing about, and if researching the facts isn't too appealing, make new ones up.

Good luck!

I have always loved reading "realistic" stories even if it's a fiction. I suggest you do B.
