For a psychiatrist, you will need to do a pre-med program (bachelors degree in something...you're better off sticking with a degree that is science related - a girl I work with starts med school in the fall, and she got her bachelors in psychology). Next, you'll need to apply to medical schools - and get accepted of course...medical school is a four-year deal. Towards the beginning of your fourth year of med school you'll need to start applying for different residency programs in psychology - and defintiely apply to several as you may not get your first or second or even fifth choice. I think the residency for psychiatry is 3 years, but let me check my work site and get back with you on that.
Correction: psychiatry is a 5 year residency.

A psychiatrist has to go to med school, so it is 4 years of college, 4 years of med school, 2 years of general residency, and probably at least 2 more of specialized training.
A psychologist goes to 4 years of college, at least 2 years of grad school for a masters, and then often a ph.d. program, another 2 to 3 years.
Another option for Therapy is social work, 4 years of college, 2 years grad school, and then additional courses in your chosen field.
