I am making a class keepsake for our 2nd grade class to be auctioned off. I woulld like to photogragh each child and transfer the picture onto a piece of tile. I would then like to make a mosaic cross (to hang on a wall) with those tiles. First is it possible and second would it be very hard. I am not very crafty. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

Hi:

You can do that. Check out the Delphi Glass website, and they have some cool printer stuff that you can print on and transfer an image to fused glass. It's called Fusing Photo Paper, and you'll need to use a laser printer with a carbon-based toner to get the transfer. It looks like it creates a sepia toned image.

For a full color image, it looks like you may have to have decals made. I found a site that looks like it will make them called BelDecal. It looks like there is a laser printer decal paper you can get and print the images yourself. I don't know if they would be as durable as a real glazed ceramic or glass piece, but they may be pretty durable none the less.

You can also use an acrylic gel medium to use as something like a collage medium, and it will adhere to practically anything you could think of. I think it is really water resistant, and I saw someone on a DIY crafts show adhere paper and images to a stone that was then placed in an outdoor fountain. You might also go over to the DIY website, and do a search under their craft shows to see if you can find an example of a project that might be similar to what you're wanting to do.

This sounds like a fun thing you're trying to do. You could probably get bisque fired tiles (or make them yourself if you go that route), and do whatever the process is for transferring the images to the tiles. To make the crosses, you might check out some of the cool air dry paper clays. That's easy to work with, and the final piece is lightweight, and can be painted with regular craft paints or embellished in other ways.

I truly hope this helps and gives you some ideas about how you might create this project. If you need more help, or have any questions, feel free to check out my yahoo group, just do a search under yahoo groups for artist_pw.
