NONE!

An infant does not need water. He gets all the water he needs from breastmilk or formula. (Both are mostly water!)

Giving an infant water can actually be DANGEROUS. It can cause a condition known as water intoxication which can be serious.

Also, giving an infant water fills up his belly but doesn't give him any calories to grow on. Infants need breastmilk or formula to get the calories and nutrients that they need to grow. Filling them up with water can cause poor weight gain and harm milk supply.

Per the AAP:
http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496
Supplements (water, glucose water, formula, and other fluids) should not be given to breastfeeding newborn infants unless ordered by a physician when a medical indication exists.

None. You risk poisoning your baby with water intoxication by giving water. Breastmilk is 88% water anyway, and if you use formula then you already know how much of that is water, too. I put several links at the bottom that tells you exactly how much water an infant should (or should NOT) drink. They also should tell you when it is okay to start offering water and how much.

My son's pediatrician gave me the green light to let my son drink water just a week before he turned 5 months old. She did remind me NOT to give him more than 8oz a day coz he might refuse milk. I've tried to make him drink water but he's just not interested (unless he had some meds like paracetamol drops).. even though he's eating infant solids now, he's refusing to drink water but chugs on milk :)

children under a year old should not drink any water. they should get a couple ounces of formula/breast milk with their meals if they've started to eat solids most of the time. little babies especially should not get water. they get all the water they need from breast milk or formula. you can really do a lot of damage to them by giving them straight water. they fill up on water and then they're not hungry for formula and they really need the nutrients and calories and secondly, it can thin out their blood too much and cause cardiac problems and other problems. they'll drink way more then they should because it'll fill them up temporarily, but then they'll be hungry again soon and then they'll get even more water in their formula/breastmilk. they're little systems aren't ready for water yet unless it's mixed w/formula. you can start introducing pasturized juice when they turn 6 mos old but they should still be getting 99% of their hydration from breast milk or formula.

None until after 6 months. My husbands family and I are in a debate about that right now. In my opinion, it isn't necessary. If you are breastfeeding, the foremilk is thin enough for thirst. (there is foremilk and hindmilk) If you are formula feeding, use more boiled water than can says to use.

There is a risk of giving your baby methemologlobinemi (a blood disorder) from high nitrate levels. The risk isn't worth it to me. Best of luck with your decision.

i never really gave my infants water. between breastmilk and formula, they get all the water they need. with my 11 mon. old i put a little water in a sippy cup,but otherwise with my oldest i waited until she was 1 yr. old. then she would only get a couple ounces. by 2,she drank only water and milk.

Your infant should not have any water at all. It just fills them up and does not have any calories in it. I only have my daughter water if she had the hiccups. Breastmilk or formula is all he/she needs.

too plenty water isn't that stable for toddlers, yet too plenty juice isn't the two. have you ever tried making use of vegetable juices? those are extra clever than only giving him fruit juices each and every of the time. additionally i think of you need to communicate on your pediatrician approximately how usually your son is thirsty. whilst my son became born he had to stay interior the scientific institution using fact his sugar tiers have been low and he could no longer stabilize them. The nurse instructed me that some toddlers have hardship with there pancreas producing adequate insulin and it could become early tiers of diabetes in the event that they are able to't look after their sugar tiers. I asked the customary practitioner approximately it and he shown that toddlers can instruct warning signs of diabetes. i understand thirst is actual one among the indicators, so it could be nicely worth only bringing it up on your customary practitioner.... hi extra clever risk-free then sorry whilst it comprises our infants!!
