well, men wore typically pants, fastened with buttons or fasteners, held up with suspenders, and button down shirts.

Women wore lots of gingham dresses with full skirts. Formal wear might include hoop dresses, especially in the south.

Hats for both at most times. Gloves for formal times.

Boots (lots of horse manure in the streets) were the standard for outside. A lady might wear slippers at a dance.

You saw a lot of dark colors. There were very strict rules, especially for women, about what to wear during mourning. Black, purple, and grey were frequently seen on those who lost loved ones.

Well it matters, where people were from, what class they were in, and what they did for a living. A woman from the north would look different than a woman from the south. A woman from the north would more likely wear something like wool, while a woman from the south might be more likely to wear something like cotton or depending on her class silk. Most women with standing in society had hoop skirts and wore corsets. Men again are different considering where they were from and where they were in society. The climate of where they are from would determine if they wore something more constricting or something lighter. Their collars were small, folded over but close to the neck and it was more like a straight line and less like the collars of the shirts men wear today. Zippers weren't invented yet so everything was button up on both men and women's clothes.

All the clothing was made from natural fabrics...wool and cotton. There were no zippers, buttons were the norm. All the shoes and boots were made from leather. Almost everyone wore hats and the ladies wore bonnets and carried umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun. ........ Even the clothing that was tailored didn't fit too well. The fabric in mens pants wouldn't hold a crease for very long, this was one the reasons that most men tucked their pants legs into boots..............
