Depending on the size of yard you have, you might not want to attempt it. You will have to trench in the lines or rent a pipe puller. If you get estimates, here is a list of things to ask for. Hunter Pro-C controller, Hunter I-20 stainless steel rotary heads, Rainbird 5000 stainless steel is acceptable (DO Not use Toro, their quality has gone way down in the last 5 years). You want a schedule 40 PVC mainline. A freeze resistant PVB backflow. For valves, either irritrol or Hunter. You also want 100 PSI poly pipe (not 80 PSI). You want all fittings double clamped and the valves triple clamped. You will pay more for this, but you should have many trouble free years out of it. If you really want to put the system in yourself, go to http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=LawnGarden/UndergroundSprinkler.html&rn=RightNavFiles/rightNavPlumbing and use my tips. Just don't use Lowe's or Home Depot parts. They sell the lesser quality of the brands.

Even tho I'm a DIY guy I think this is a job for the professional installer. I support you in adding this great feature and I have had a sprinkler system in my last two homes. I have done some tweaking after the major work was done. The job will run somewhere around $2000 depending on the size of your yard. Get a couple of estimates and some references if you can.

Best get with someone who does this professionally. There are many things to figure out. Like spray heads, water pressure, patterns. amount of water needed.
They can be labor intensive, it seems you are always adjusting the spray pattern, so you are not wasting watering the street. You also have to drain the system if you live in an area that has freezing weather.
They are nice, but you don't have the trenching equipment or the other tools required to do the job properly. Now that's just a guess but I'll bet I'm close, because I don't either. and I used to work on them.
