I have always wanted to know what they are short for... Is it a latin acronym?

antemeridiem (before noon) and postmeridiem (after noon)

A.M. is ante meridiem (Latin for "before midday" - another word with ante is "antecedent") and P.M. is post meridiem (Latin for "after noon.") Good question! I didn't know either.

Ante-meridian and Post Meridian, a reference to the division of time on either side of the international dateline, which is somewhere on the planet of Earth.
