There are so many places to get great guitars at great prices.
1. E bay, sure, you don't know what you are getting??!!?, not true, just make sure the person has an excellent feedback score, and details and comments should be very helpful.
2. Estate Sales, this is one place where you can get the best deal, as, most people go to get china, antiques, silver, paintings........many of the musical instruments, aren't even on peoples minds for them, but you must be very very early, and find it fast, most of the time the ad in the paper, or online, shows what the Estate will have, but sometimes, certain items are omitted, or, are discovered after print, and added at door open time. I got an awesome signature mohagany acoustic for 50.00 this way.
3. just do yourself a favor, and break down, and get what you want the first time, this saves you money, because, you will not want what you don't have, case in point, my first guitar, junk, my second guitar, better junk, lol, several junks later, voila, Les Paul Custom Black Beauty 57'. I do not care to, nor do I even wish to play anything but this guitar, I wish instead of being spontaneous, I would have just saved for it in the first place. Or even better yet, lay it away, or finance it.....If you decide to get a high end guitar, "Strat", "Les Paul", Charvez,(and the other name they are now...lol), buy it new, you will feel better about it in the long run, sort of like getting a puppy and watching it become a dog. Best of luck to you. and remember the words in the song Revelations, by Iron Maiden, (while listening to it, scroll pics of Katrina, it is an amazing fit.)

First, I wouldn't get a starter kit, they are crap. If you want a good guitar you have to pay at least $250-300. I know this is not probably what you wanted to hear but hey, I started just like you and I regret not getting a good one from the get go. Check out some Les Pauls from Epiphone, they're the best your going to get for the price. Also a good amp makes a big difference. Also later you can try to change humbuckers. I recommend the ones I got, EMG 86.

I am new to guitar as well. What I found out is that my guitar just needed to be "setup" in other words adjusted. They can adjust the strings so that they are closer to the frets which allows you to play the notes/cords easier and you will sound much better. The quality of the strings can also make the guitar sound rather shabby as well. Before they talk you into another guitar see if some of these small adjustments will help first.

Well, from my expierience:
I got my first guitar on ebay. I got a red fender (nice 4 beginners) for like 70 bucks.
If you don't like what you see at www.ebay.com then try www.musiciansfriend.com or americanmusical.com
I got my new guitar at american musical, i recomend, cause sometimes they are cheaper.

Since you are a beginner I would go with a starter pack or a fender guitar and find a decent price amp, any will really do.

Good luck, cause its awesome to know another guitar player is being born!
Your fellow guitarist,
Me

Try a music store. They can steer you in the right direction.. also bring your old guitar along.. maybe its fixable, which would save you major bucks. ALSO- do NOT buy one at a pawn shop. Pawn shops charge WAY too much for CRAPPY guitars.

you can always go to a music store that sells used guitars, i bought mine used and it is pretty good. They may not look the best, but they should be pretty good.
